Buyers – good young buyers with potential that is - seem to be a bottleneck function.

So when I heard of the “youngstar program”, it sounded like a good solution.  The idea of having a young potential coached on the job  in our company was particularly appealing. But could Supplyplus accomplish what they promised?  I took a chance and made a leap of faith towards the outcome.

At this moment, one and a half year later, I know that it was worth it. We have strengthened our team with an (ex-)youngstar, who is now a full member of our team. Early this year we have started with a second youngstar.

The factors that define the success of this program are first of all the players, the youngstars themselves. Their selection is clearly based on a high standard in the right skillset for future buyers as well as on motivation and eagerness to learn.

Furthermore, the way the coaching is done turns this program really into something unique. Supplyplus attributes different coaches to the youngstars in order to ensure a steep learning curve on different aspects of the job.

It also striked me that these youngstars and their coaches, tend to blend into the company very fast. Even though they are trained in market best practices and methodologies, these ways of working integrate very smoothly into the way of working of our purchasing team. To ensure this, the coaches check deviant ways of working with the internal management on a regular base, and fit their approach into the company culture and company goals.

Looking back on this, I am convinced Supplyplus will continue to grow as an important asset for their partners.  Their programs are all custom made on the specific needs of their customers. This youngstar program offers an excellent value for money.

What once looked like a risk, turned into a valuable investment for the purchasing department.
